I have a passion for many things in addition to exploring Ghost Towns and Mining Camps. A couple others happen to be Photography and Astronomy. While I'm out in the boonies at night there is usually plenty of time to experiment with "Night Photography".

For me anyway’s, it’s not always that easy to get the settings and focus dialed in because of the usual deficient amount of light to work with.

A technique I enjoy using is called “light painting”. Instead of using a camera’s flash, I just use my flashlight to light up the subject matter. The benefit is I can shine the flashlight from a different angle than the camera is taking the photo from. This induces more distinct shadows into the photo for a more “dimensional” look in the final image. I don’t use this technique all the time though. The photo below is an example of using the available or ambient light.

Some folks like to use colored lights to paint the scene with or gel-type colored lighting which can be located in different places to create a certain “look”. For me, that’s just not my style. I really don’t like to induce or position artificial colors into my photos and it seems unnatural. I appreciate the available colors and the way things are positioned as they were when I arrived so I won’t “layout” or pose the contents of a photo before I take it..... Included here are some of my attempts... Enjoy.
